The Green Ummah workshops are curated lessons delivered to classes, teachers, school boards, corporate boards, Mosques and community groups focused on the following topics. The workshops are tailored to meet the needs of your organization:

  • We ensure that the material is relevant and challenging for different age groups and levels of expertise. The workshops have been delivered to children as young as 7 years old all the way up to seasoned professionals in the environmental field.
  • The workshops can be between 1-4 hours each.
  • The workshops can be delivered virtually, in-person indoors or as an in-nature/outdoor learning experience.

Green Ummah has previously delivered workshops for the North American Association for Environmental Education, the Outdoor Learning Store, the Muslim Association of Canada, the University of Toronto and the York Region District School Board, along with several community groups. We invite you to contact us at info@greenummah.org to inquire about booking a workshop for your organization.

Islam and the Environment
The Islam and the Environment Workshop will explore the Islamic guidance on how to engage with the environment and what obligations we have to the planet. The workshop will focus on Islamic principles of green living, based on the traditions and narrations of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the Quran. Our goal is to inspire a commitment to environmental stewardship as we discuss topics such as protecting plants and animals, conserving water, and discouraging waste. There is infinite wisdom in Islam and we believe that learning Islamic principles of sustainable living will help participants reflect on the practical changes they can make to adopt an environmentally friendly lifestyle in the light of Quranic and Prophetic teachings. We hope to not only strengthen our knowledge of Islam as a comprehensive religion that covers all aspects of life, but also to better apply — individually and collectively — the environmental principles of our religion and maintain a green ummah.

Environmental Justice
Environmental racism is a term to describe the way in which minority group neighbourhoods (populated primarily by Indigenous and Black peoples) are burdened with a disproportionate number of hazards, including toxic waste facilities, garbage dumps, and other sources of environmental pollution and foul odors that lower the quality of life. All around the globe, members of racialized groups bear a greater burden of the health problems that result from higher exposure to waste and pollution.

Another form of environmental racism is lack of access to outdoor and natural spaces.

The goal of Green Ummah’s Environmental Justice Workshop is to provide participants with an understanding of systemic racism and environmental racism in Canada through the analysis of historical and contemporary examples. Participants will be assigned a case study and in groups, they will learn how Canada has responded to each situation, and they will make their own recommendations for taking action. This workshop will give participants the opportunity to reflect on their role within existing power structures and work collectively towards environmental justice.
